John Rutter’s Magnificat is a joyous celebration of the Virgin Mary, set to the text from the Gospel of Luke and incorporating additional Latin texts and a 15th-century English poem. The work features energetic and dance-like rhythms, often with a hint of musical theatre, and is structured to be joyful and affirmative. It was composed in 1990 and is a concert-style extended setting, following the precedent of Bach.
