About Us

Ryde Chorus was formed in the early ’90s and attracts members from all over the Isle of Wight and beyond.

Ryde Chorus is a registered charity number 1115171

The 40 – 60  members of the choir perform three varied concerts a year at different venues on the Isle of Wight, some with full orchestra and guest soloists, some unaccompanied with soloists from the choir, some more informally with guest musicians and singers.

The choir occasionally joins, or is joined by, other choral groups or choirs, for performances of  larger works.

Our Musical Director is Philip Fryer.

Philip started singing oratorio at University College, London, under John Poole.

He sang in the extensive plainsong project for Radio 3 with The Taverner Consort (Andrew Parrott). He performed in the Florentine Intermedi of 1610, and had his Radio 3 solo debut with Gothic Voices. Later he sang for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer on Radio 3. At this time he was Chorus Master for the Sainsbury Singers.

Philip sang Bach’s B minor Mass in the Berlin Bach Festival with the London Baroque Soloists, and was then selected for Mozart master classes at Glyndebourne, where he sang Ferrando (Cosi fan tutte), Tamino (The Magic Flute) and Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni).

For over 20 years Philip was a deputy Lay Vicar at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. He is a founder member of the Choir of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and with them has sung widely in Europe and USA under Sir Neville Marriner. In 1997, they performed in the Academy for Performing Arts in Hong Kong for the handover. He has toured Greece, Holland and Turkey singing Misa Flamenca with Paco Pena. He was Chorus Master for ASMF in the mainly Mozart festival at The Barbican Centre.
